Gathering in the Garden

Gathering in the Garden or Flourshing in the Field
Text: Matthew 13:31- 32, Luke 13:18-19

The parable of the mustard seed is found in the Gospesl of Matthew and Luke. Most of us are familiar with the similarities in the two accounts. A small seed grows into a great tree with branches that birds can come and lodge in. Sunday we learned the differences in the two stories and found the mustard seed parable could really be considered two separate parables. In Matthew the mustard seed is sown in a field. In Luke the seed is cast into a garden. No matter how tiny the seed; there is a huge difference in sowing and casting. Sowing seeds carefully in a field takes time. Casting into a garden is carelessly throwing the seeds with no concern of what will happen to them. There is also a huge difference in a garden and a field. A garden is designed to feed a few. The purpose of a planted field is to feed many. There comes a time when we must grow tired of gathering from a garden for just a few and flourish in the field for the multitudes. It is easy to have small faith for things to grow in a garden. We need to have bigger faith for the great harvest waiting on us in the field. The garden is the church. The field is the world. Jesus came to the world for a specific purpose. His purpose was to restore people in the field who had messed up in the garden. Jesus spent time in the garden and the field as we should also. If Jesus had stayed in the garden where the world cast Him where would we be now? The purpose of Word of Life Church is to reach the world who God so loved that He gave His only Son for. We must tell them of the restoration found in Jesus Christ, the Seed sown by God Himself.
